From Power Systems International comes the SD28M Series of ground power DC systems. The system is designed for aircraft engine starting and battery charging applications for outdoor “point of use” installations including aircraft parking stands, maintenance hangars, avionics workshops, aircraft manufacturing plants and training simulators, all where a quiet, efficient and reliable high-stability DC power source is required.
 
This compact dimensioned mobile or trolley type ground power unit is designed for handling by one person but may be also towed by the normal airport tugs using the fitted tow-bar. The tow-bar is attached to the front wheel steering assembly and operates the parking brake when moved into the vertical position. The SD28M DC ground power unit power is configured as standard for connection to the normal 400V 3 phase 50Hz (or a 460V 60Hz) mains source and is available in two sizes. The 400A model has a peak output of 1,500A and the 600A model has a peak output of 2,400A to provide all types of helicopters and small aircraft with a 28V DC high stability and isolated power.
 
Unlike the diesel engine driven GPUs, there is little audible noise from the SD28M mobile GPU, no exhaust fumes, smoke, environmental pollution or vibration, no fuel storage, risk of fuel spillage or diesel engine maintenance costs. Use of the SD28M obviates the need for an aircraft to run its engines or its APU whilst on parking stands, thus preventing aircraft engine noise, fuel consumption and aviation fuel fumes. This allows for safe use during noise restricted hours imposed by environmentalists and at airports where noise abatement regulations are enforced.
