Aerolaser / Bird Strike Prevention and Avoidance

Date 13.08.2015

Khartoum Airport is the first African airport to use laser technology to mitigate bird strikes. Birds at the airport pose an immediate safety risk by colliding with the aircraft. Dutch company Bird Control Group helps airports to scare away birds using harmless laser beams and thereby improve safety.

Especially during dawn and dusk, large amounts of birds are present at Khartoum Airport, which increases the risk of accidents. Several airlines urged the airport authorities to take action against the bird nuisance. Mohammed Osman, bird control manager at Khartoum Airport: “We take these comments very seriously. Currently we are professionalizing the bird strike prevention efforts. At the World Bird Strike Conference in Mexico we heard about the laser technology of Bird Control Group. We knew right away that this would be an essential tool for our airport.” CEO at Bird Control Group Steinar Henskes is impressed by the ambition of the African airport. “They have the goal to be an example for airports in the East African region when it comes to safety. I’m glad Bird Control Group contributes to this goal.”

The first foreign supplier

The purchase of the Aerolaser Handheld from Bird Control Group means that the airport used a foreign supplier for the first time in its history. Traditionally, Khartoum Airports procures everything from Sudanese companies. Since flight safety is at stake, Director General Salah Salam Muhanna personally ensured that Bird Control Group could supply the laser directly to the airport. Upon delivery, Bird Control Group always provides extensive training for airport personnel. “It’s our way to ensure that they can use the laser effectively and safely,” says Henskes.
