The order included designing the air terminal devices which were to comply to set standards with respect to air movement, noise and pressure loss limitations as well as space restrictions. While most of the units were supplied with assembly by others, few units were also assembled on site by Strulik.
Strulik engineers worked on the design of the units in Duisburg including frequent meetings with the architects and the client’s engineers at Heathrow. More than 90 percent of the units were developed specially for the project. All those units were tested to ensure proper performance. CFD (computational fluid dynamics) studies were also called upon to improve some of the performances.
The CFD studies were performed by Strulik’s co¬operation partners GTD of Dresden. Noise, air move¬ment and pressure loss tests were performed by Strulik as well as at the Technical College of Cologne.
Displacement units were primarily designed for Terminal A but mixing system units were designed for Terminal B and the Track Transit System. The supply of units commenced at the beginning of 2006 and completed in the autumn of 2007.
