NATS shortlisted for prestigious award

A maths mentoring project established and operated by local employer, NATS has been shortlisted as a finalist in the ‘Community Service/Development Project 2013’ category in the prestigious International Project Management Association Achievement Awards.

Recognised for its contribution to the local community and the successful results delivered, the maths mentoring project used volunteer mentors from NATS to help increase the number of students achieving higher grade Maths GCSEs at the King Richard School, in the Paulsgrove district of Portsmouth.

The mentoring programme was directed at year 10 and 11 students (14 to 16 year olds), helping them with subjects such as trigonometry, equations and factors.  The aim was to improve their understanding and confidence in maths enough to bring them into the A* to C bracket, and in so doing presenting them with more and better options for their futures.

First starting in 2008, the project has been running for five years and the results achieved have raised the Grade A* to C Maths pass rate from 21% to 55%.

The mentoring project was put forward for this international accolade by the Association for Project Management (APM), which was impressed by the achievements made since work began five years ago.

Richard Scott, NATS Maths Mentor Project Manager, said: “Personally, it’s been a rewarding experience and it’s been good to do something different – I have to say my mental arithmetic skills have also improved! And we’ve had a lot of thanks from the students and teaching staff too.

“It’s an honour to be shortlisted for this award and included with other great and worthwhile projects from around the world.”

The IPMA International Project Excellence Award is annually awarded to the most successful project teams in the world. The award identifies examples of excellent project management and acknowledges innovative projects. It supports professional project management in achieving high performance in projects and motivates project teams to identify and optimise the use of their strengths.
