Our innovative PC Air design evolved over the years, and our work on the F22 led FCX Systems to be the first PC Air manufacturer to supply PC Air for the F35 JSF program. Our units were the first used to support the F22 & F35 aircraft, and remain the main central and point-of-use supplier to these two cutting edge programs.
After several years of development, FCX launched a commercial line of PC Air units. These PC Air units were designed to be the most efficient, lightest, quietest, and smallest units in the world. Standard units offer stainless steel plenums as well as aluminum panels to create a rust resistant unit. FCX offers optional stainless steel frames for harsh environments, and copper coils to double the expected life of the units. Due to the success of the PC Air product line, FCX built a second manufacturing facility to keep up with demand.
Shortly after we shipped our 500th PC Air unit, we were invited to bid on a project, which included the design and manufacturing of a 375 ton, 1100 PPM, 3PSI unit for the Airborne Laser Program. This was a custom design unit. The control capabilities were very sophisticated and the design process complex. These units are now in use, cooling the electronics and chemical oxygen iodine lasers mounted inside the modified B747-400F.
After the completion of this high performing unit, we started to focus our efforts on combination power and air units. While FCX made the first combo unit in 2003, called the External APU, we started to see a great demand for this unit as aviation fuel costs soared. Our External APU units became extremely popular. We shipped over 70 of these type units for regional Express carriers in the US and Caribbean. Our diesel mobile model is the most popular External APU because it greatly reduces ramp clutter by combining several diesel units into one package. Along with reducing ramp clutter, it became a much better return of investment because only one engine had to be maintained, and the fuel burn rates were superior to several diesel engines used by the conventional independent power and air units.
Since 2002, FCX has made some of the most innovative PC Air units in the world. We never start small and simple at FCX. Our first units were a custom design for the F22 Raptor program at Edwards AFB. These units were designed as a 2-stage unit, including a single chilled water main plenum, and then divided into 4 direct expansion systems with the ability to be independently controlled and also able to run simultaneously to support multiple F22 Aircraft. These types of units were never made before but because of the engineering capabilities of FCX, we were able to make these one-of-a kind units.
In 2008, FCX began full production of commercial Air Handler Units (AHU). These AHUs use a glycol and water mixture from a central chiller plant to cool and heat aircraft. The challenge was to design the most efficient unit in the industry that would work as a direct replacement to older less efficient AHUs as well as outperform normal industry standards that have been set for years. Our AHU has been noted to be up to three times more efficient in heating modes and reduced flow modes for smaller aircraft service as compared to current offered AHUs. The unit works smarter and in turn increases the life of the unit as well as decreasing the average kW per hour usage.
In the last eight years, FCX has made some of the highest performing PC Air Units in the world. We have units that deliver extreme dry air for avionics cooling. We have units that can deliver up to 6 PSI. We have units that provide 20-degree air and some that can produce up to 375 Tons.
Innovation has been the backbone of this product line. When purchasing a FCX PC Air design you can be certain that we have the ability to deliver a unit that meets your most stringent requirements.
