Paving technology introduced to the UK by Colas is producing great benefits for airport operators – improving safety, reducing risks and furthering the overall value of runway resurfacing schemes. In the heavily regulated environment of UK airfields in which it is difficult to innovate, Colas has put great effort into introducing better performing asphalt pavements.

This started at Sumburgh airport in the Shetland Islands in 2006, continued on the island of Tiree in the Inner Hebrides in 2007 and from 2008 two major runway resurfacing schemes are being carried out by Colas using asphalt designed to the French Béton Bitumeux Aéronautique (BBA) specification at Isle of Man and Jersey Airports.

The transfer of BBA asphalt to UK airfields represents a great innovation. Other alternatives to Marshall Asphalt have been tried less successfully. Undeterred, Colas has not accepted the norm, but instead moved airfield paving forward and offered airport operators a wider choice.

The Excel Conference Centre, Docklands saw Carl Fergusson, Business Manager Colas Ltd and other award winners celebrate at the AOA Annual Awards ceremony the centrepiece of the Conference Dinner. The event, attended by over 200 delegates from across the industry and related businesses attracted record numbers of Managing Directors and senior level delegates, with visitors visiting sponsor and exhibitor stands prior to the ceremony itself.

The winners, decided democratically by the AOA Board, were selected for their outstanding work in their particular field.

Ed Anderson, AOA Chairman commented:

“The number and quality of entries was unprecedented, reflecting the quality of people and companies working in the airports industry. Deciding on the winners was a difficult process, with so many outstanding entries, but the award winners showed particular excellence and dedication in their field.”

The Airport Operators Association (AOA) is the trade association that represents the interests of British airports and is the principal body with whom the UK Government and regulatory authorities consult on airport matters. AOA maintains close and regular liaison with the UK government and the appropriate Departments of State as well as key industry regulatory bodies.
