The Report, which has been nearly 3 years in the making, researched a number of options for the UK to accommodate the increasing number of people travelling to the UK by expanding airport capacity.

The three options analysed in the Report were:

  • Building a new runway at Heathrow
  • Building a new runway at Gatwick
  • Extend one of Heathrow’s existing runways

While each of the 3 schemes shortlisted was considered a credible option for expansion, the Commission has unanimously concluded that the proposal for a new northwest runway at Heathrow Airport, combined with a significant package of measures to address its environmental and community impacts, presents the strongest case and offers the greatest strategic and economic benefits – providing around 40 new destinations from the airport and more than 70,000 new jobs by 2050. However, the government still need to approve the recommendation set out in the Report, and will reach a decision in Autumn.

Peter Bamfield, Associate Director for Airfields said: “Whilst the debate will continue in the media about the Airport Commission’s decision, for Colas the very fact that the report has been published is great news for us and the wider industry.

“The UK needs to expand its airport capacity, and the publication of the Davies Report is a significant milestone in the strategy for that to happen.

“Whatever the final outcome, with our experience in building and maintaining runways and airport infrastructure we are placed in a favourable position to bid for future works. As we say, wherever, whenever, we’re ready.”

The Report comes less than 24 hours after Colas attended and sponsored The Voice of UK Airports focus group and the AOA summer reception at the Houses of Parliament. Colas will also be attending the highly-anticipated Runways UK event next week, which will focus heavily on the Report, and includes a session with Sir Howard Davies himself.
