Colas have commenced work on another multi-million pound airport project, this time on Manchester Airport Runway 1.

Working as a specialist paving contractor to Costain, resurfacing works are being carried out under restricted night time possessions of the main runway during the month of July. Colas’ airport paving teams will remove the old surface and relay 20,000 tonnes of new asphalt manufactured using one of Colas’ high capacity mobile asphalt plants located on site.

The project will be a landmark for UK airports as it will be one of the first to use an un-grooved Béton Bitumineux Aéronautique (BBA) surface course which was introduced by Colas Ltd into the UK from France.

With more than 100 airlines operating from the airport and 22 million passengers passing through Manchester airport every year, it is the busiest airport in the country outside the London region, 4th busiest airport in the United Kingdom and 12th busiest airport in Europe.

Once again Colas is able to combine its manufacturing and contracting strengths in a vertically integrated approach with over 1,100 tonnes of Colflex bitumen binder being supplied by Colas Ltd from its own plant near Warrington.

The project is another landmark for Colas’ Airfields Division and further cements the company’s position as a leading contractor and innovator in this highly specialist field.
