Colas have commenced mixing and laying surfacing materials at RAF Barkston Heath, near Grantham, as part of Infrastructure Maintenance's supply chain to Babcock Dyncorp on the Defence Infrastructure Organisation's (DIO) Eastern Regional Prime Contract.

The scheme will see the replacement of one of the runways' existing bituminous materials with a stone mastic asphalt (SMA) binder and surface course, as well as the treatment of existing joints at the runway ends and below the surfacing of the existing concrete pavement. SMA was selected to provide a textured, durable, and rut resistant wearing course.

Barkston Heath is a WW2 airfield which remains active today as an RAF flying training facility.

The scheme is scheduled for completion at the end of March and is progressing well.
