Following on from the recent successful appointment at Newquay Cornwall Airport as the main contractor to refurbish the Echo taxiway and apron, Colas' Airfields, Asphalt and Projects team were asked to carry out further operations at the location.

The team commenced the new phase of works in April 2012, which included the resurfacing of the Echo taxiway shoulders and two helipads, and they completed the works by the end of April.

Colas Airfields Manager, Simon Downing, said: "As with the previous works our team held consultations with the airport to discuss their options.

We proposed using a sustainable solution -Low Temperature Asphalt (LTA) – to address the shoulder upgrade requirements. The LTA includes an additive which allows the material to be mixed at lower temperatures, which provides significant environmental benefits in reduced CO2 and energy consumption in producing the material, and significantly reduces fumes to the benefit of the workforce and the immediate environment. The LTA material was manufactured by Colas Cornwall Quarries at the Carnsew plant.

We will also be using our Worthycim grouted macadam on the helipads to ensure that a fuel resisting surface is provided. The Worthycim increases the design life of the pavement, well over that of traditional asphalt solutions, and withstands the additional loads which will use the helipads.

Worthycim has greater resistance than asphalt to permanent deformation, mechanical damage and attack by fuels and oils, so it is an ideal solution for areas requiring extra strength such as a helipad."

Newquay Cornwall Airport is the main commercial airport for Cornwall and is located at St Mawgan on Cornwall's north coast.
