Airport AC and DC GPUs, 400Hz Convertors, Electrical Support Systems and Power Supplies #2

Company Powervamp Ltd
Date 18.08.2014

In November 2013 CHC Helicopters, Aberdeen contracted Powervamp to supply a PV-45 45kVA frequency converter for their

East Hangar maintenance operation at ABZ.

PV45 Case Study

“Although CHC had invested in several new diesel GPUs, they were unreliable and the time it was taking to get the diesel units fixed was having an operational impact.”

This opportunity lead Powervamp into discussions about providing CHC with a distributed 400Hz system on their apron at ABZ.

Although CHC had invested in several new diesel GPUs, they were unreliable and the time it was taking to get the diesel units fixed was having an operational impact. Because of the low kVA draw required from the Eurocopter 332L2, EC225 and the Sikorsky S92 Powervamp suggested the installation of one PV-45 45kVA frequency converter distributed to four separate stands, each fitted with its own interlock kit, as pictured below.

This set up allows CHC to power up to four aircraft at a time, from a single 45kVA frequency converter.

“With fixed electrical ground power in place, CHC look forward to seeing a reduction in the fuel and maintenance
costs that are associated with continually running diesel powered GPUs.”

Powervamp offered a complete turnkey solution on the project.

This included the appointment of the company that handled the ground works and electrical installation work.

CHC now have modern and reliable ground power available on the apron and in the maintenance hangar.

With fixed electrical ground power in place, CHC look forward to seeing a reduction in the fuel and maintenance costs that are

associated with continually running diesel powered GPUs and they also look forward to an improvement in operational reliability
and the avoidance of late departure penalties whilst making the apron a safer, cleaner and  quieter environment for the
ground crews.

Michael Reading, Ground Support Equipment Coordinator at CHC Aberdeen said:

“The installation and commissioning of  Airside Aviation Power by Powervamp on behalf of CHC Helicopter in Aberdeen was

handled with both exceptional professionalism and enthusiasm. Supply of equipment best suited to the project and sourcing of
additional associated works was well communicated.

A very big thank you to the personnel and teams at Powervamp.”
