Latchways - Keeping ahead of the game being BIM ready

As a collaborative working process for the creation and life of a building, BIM (Building Information Modelling) is revolutionising the UK construction industry. Latchways has long since recognised the value and benefits BIM capabilities will bring to its customers and has been working to develop its roofing portfolio for the past 12 months—enabling the industry to begin using this process nearly a year ahead of the government deadline of 2016.

Sheu Wah Ho, Latchways’ Technical Services Engineer, explains: “Our ManSafe® fall protection systems are trusted around the world to ensure people are safe on an extraordinarily wide range of structures, from buildings to towers to bridges. So it’s hugely important for us to continually be proactive and give our customers the absolute best in fall protection—that’s why we didn’t want to wait until 2016 to get BIM ready and are pleased to have our portfolio of rooftop solutions now available. BIM is really starting to be embraced by the construction industry as a whole and we wanted to be the first in fall protection to be there.

Latchways’ initial BIM portfolio demonstrates a major investment into the future growth of the business, and brings a unique offering to customers.  By being able to integrate fall protection at the design stage of buildings, architects and specifiers get an entirely simplified process which at the same time offers more complexity and more intelligence.

Dean Grady, Product Manager—Roofing, Sika Limited comments: “BIM is becoming more and more important for businesses in this sector, and for us, the more we can do at the design stage of a project the better. We’ve been impressed by what we’ve seen from Latchways so far—models are very advanced and help ensure that when a Sika roofing system is specified it can be complimented with a fully tested and compliant fall protection solution from Latchways.

Latchways’ Sheu Wah Ho concludes: “We feel confident we are making a positive contribution to the industry with our BIM portfolio. We can offer our customers full compliance with standards, full compatibility with existing systems, clear modelling guidelines, improved design processes and most importantly, the capability to truly protect people working at height.

The Latchways Constant Force® roofing systems currently available for BIM are: Standing Seam, BUOS Composite, Single-ply and Green Roofs. The company has future plans to expand its BIM offering to other areas of the business, specifically overhead and vertical systems.
