The Chadian Civil Aviation Authority (ADAC) is planning to develop new infrastructure on Abeche Airport (in the center of the Chad). Part of this project consists in upgrading aeronautical pavement and especially runway standards in order to accommodate code E aircraft category such as Boeing B747-400.
The existing runway is 2800 meters long and 30 meters wide, which is not sufficient to accommodate large airplanes. In order to operate code E aircraft, the runway width will have to be extended to 45 meters with two 7.5 meters wide runway shoulders. The airport manoeuvring areas will need to be extended as well to comply with the requirements of this type of aircraft.
ADAC selected Egis to conduct the preliminary and detailed design for this project. The contract was awarded to a team of airport project managers and engineers from Egis Avia. They are in charge of collecting data related to the airport traffic, topography, existing structures and electric facility. This initial study will provide relevant information to assess the feasibility of the runway enlargement and its potential consequences on movement areas. Egis Avia will then be able to define a programme of associated upgrade works with limited impact on current traffic. This will include excavation works, drainage as well as aeronautical pavement and runway lighting adaptations.
