Support to the implementation of approaches with EGNOS satellite vertical guidance – 12/06/2009

A consortium led by Egis assists EUROCONTROL in the promotion and operational implementation of approaches with EGNOS vertical guidance

During approach phases, most accidents are caused by the absence of vertical guidance. Over the last years, the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and the worldwide aviation community have thus been encouraging initiatives towards the replacement of non precision approaches by approaches with vertical guidance (APV), potentially delivered by a satellite system. However, current systems such as the Global Positioning System (GPS) and the Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS) do not meet the requirements for this type of approach.

The European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) system is the European initiative to improve the performance of the GPS. Jointly developed by the European Space Agency (ESA), the European Commission, the major European air navigation service providers (EOIG/ESSP) and the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation (EUROCONTROL), this device is a Space Based Augmentation System (SBAS) compatible with ICAO standards. The system enables approaches with satellite vertical guidance (APV EGNOS) with minima close to those required for category 1 precision approaches, without any additional local airport infrastructure.

Egis Avia, as a leader of a consortium formed with Airbus Transport International (ATI), the French air navigation service provider (DSNA) and PiLDo Labs has been contracted by EUROCONTROL to provide support in the promotion and operational implementation of APV EGNOS procedures.

The main activities conducted in the frame of this 20-month project are fourfold:

Validation of information coherence required to safely implement APV EGNOS procedures (Egis Avia, PiLDo, DSNA);
Definition of new APV EGNOS procedures (DSNA) and associated safety studies (Egis Avia);
Integration and certification of SBAS solution aboard an Airbus A300-600 ST Beluga ATI aircraft to operate APV EGNOS procedures on non-ILS runways (ATI supported by Egis Avia);
Promotion and implementation of APV EGNOS through communication activities and appropriate documentation (Egis Avia).
