Crisplant – part of BEUMER Group and a leading global supplier of automated baggage handling systems – announces that it has been awarded a contract by Canada’s Halifax International Airport Authority, to design, manufacture and install the new fully-automated baggage handling systems which will be integrated with the security screening equipment deployed by Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA).

The baggage handling systems will be based on two Crisplant LS-4000econ tilt-tray sorters, one in the Domestic / International area and one in the US Transborder area.  The Domestic / International system will provide an initial capacity of up to 3000 bags per hour, with the flexibility for easy expansion to meet future growth in passenger numbers.

“Space-saving features mean that the LS-4000econ can be installed in the existing footprint of the Domestic / International baggage hall and with limited expansion to the Transborder baggage hall.   These features include a modular design, 90° induction and integrated 100% baggage tracking from check-in to EDS screening to the baggage make-up area,” explains Crisplant’s Airport Sales Manager, Henrik Cort.

Michael Healy, Vice-President, Infrastructure & Commercial Development, Halifax International Airport Authority, explains, “The new systems will improve our baggage handling operations and will have the capacity to meet growing passenger demand in the years to come. The Crisplant system will enable us to move passenger bags faster, with higher accuracy and efficiency, while achieving low maintenance costs and the industry’s lowest energy consumption. With the LS-4000econ we can benefit from the advanced, automatic loop-sorting technology which is used by major air passenger hubs around the world.”

The airport’s current conveyor-based baggage handling system will continue to operate, with a minimum of disruption, whilst the Crisplant system is installed. The hand-over date for the new automated baggage handling and security screening system in the Domestic/International area is scheduled for November 2013 followed by the Transborder system in January 2014.

Crisplant’s range of baggage handling systems covers fully automated systems, such as the LS-4000 family of tilt-tray and belt sorters, in addition to semi-automated systems and new lifting aids which eliminate manual baggage handling.
