Key Facts:

  • Upgrade prepares airport for the EU Standard 2 requirements for screening
  • Supports an increase in capacity forecast for 2012
  • State-of-the-art automated baggage handling system helps to maintain high levels of user satisfaction

Crisplant – part of BEUMER Group and a leading global supplier of automated baggage handling systems – announces an upgrade to the CrisBag® integrated baggage-handling system at Brussels Airport’s Pier A terminal. The upgrade includes a hardware and software upgrade of the airport’s existing CrisBag® controls including the dedicated SAC.  Furthermore all screening equipment will be upgraded, to enable The Brussels Airport Company to comply with the new EU Standard 2 for screening, as well as to meet an increase in capacity forecast for 2012.

The CrisBag® system integrates Crisplant’s unique tote-based baggage-handling technology with all associated mechanical systems, software controls and interfaces. The system features hold baggage screening and sorting to the make-up carousels, as well as a 10km conveyor system which runs via a basement-level tunnel.

By transporting one item of baggage per tote, the CrisBag® system provides complete traceability of each item of baggage, whilst compatibility with xray screening equipment means that baggage does not have to be removed from the tote for screening. A top speed of 10 m/sec makes CrisBag® one of the fastest baggage handling systems, with a capacity of up to 2,700 items an hour.

Klaus Schäfer, Managing Director, Crisplant comments; “As part of their core strategy, Brussels Airport constantly monitors performance and quality to meet its customers requirements. This upgrade continues the long partnership between Crisplant and Brussels Airport which ensures that the baggage handling system is one of the most advanced in the industry.”

In addition to the installation at Brussels Airport, the CrisBag® system has also been installed in other major international airports including Munich, Arlanda, Changi, Helsinki, Fuerteventura and, most recently, Montreal, Canada.
