Airport Ceiling, Lighting and Daylight systems

Function and design. These two features characterize the durlum metal ceiling and lighting solution for Russia’s second largest airport.

Terminal D of the Sheremetyevo International Airport, designed by Dmitry Pshenichnikov & Partners, recalls the shape of a huge swan spreading its wings over the passengers. With its harmonious architecture, the terminal has already won the Russian Arx Award in the “Best Transport Infrastructure Object“ category.

durlum GmbH has contributed to the success of the terminal with its lighting and metal ceiling solution. The wall and ceiling construction in the large entrance area transfers the soft shapes of the building into the interior of the terminal. durlum supplied a total of 82000 m² of custom-made metal ceiling and 11000 m² of STARLAM® grid ceiling. 4380 running meters of light ducts integrated in the metal ceiling and 1390 lights, partly tailor-made, flood the terminal with pleasing light.

By building the terminal with an area of 170000 m², the airport has increased its capacity by 12 million passengers per year. In the meantime, Sheremetyevo International Airport, situated 29 km from Moscow, has become Russia’s second largest airport. Modernization and expansion of the airport, whose history started in the 50s as an airport for the Soviet Air Force, will go on for the next years, making it one of the most modern airports of Eastern Europe.
