Herbert Systems, the integrated security checkpoint solutions provider, is supplying a Herbert TRS tray return system to Smiths Detection, the world leading designer and manufacturer of advanced detection systems, for the upgrading of London Luton Airport's security screening. The order forms part of the airport’s £100 million transformation project.

The contract includes the delivery of a new passenger screening technical solution comprising Smiths Detection’s HI-SCAN 6040-2is X-ray scanner and the new Smiths Detection Checkpoint.Evo networked checkpoint system together with the Herbert TRS, designed and manufactured by Herbert Systems.

Jo Herbert, Herbert Systems’ marketing director, said: “The modular Herbert TRS provides a key element of the security checkpoint of the future. We are delighted to be working with Smiths Detection on this important project, which will result in significant improvements for London Luton Airport and its passengers.”

London Luton Airport (LLA) will be the first airport in Europe to install Smiths Detection’s Checkpoint.Evo for regular security operations, following a trial in France. The software enhances checkpoint inspection and integration capacities by linking individual sensors within a fully networked system to improve the inspection process and operational efficiency.

Smiths Detection’s head of market EMEA, Andrew Davis, said: “The combination of the HI-SCAN 6040-2is, Checkpoint.Evo and Herbert's TRS provides an outstanding technological solution to the requirement for smarter checkpoints. The result will be a significant improvement in operational efficiency."

The technology will also help in improving security capabilities by speeding passenger flow through security checks, minimising waiting times and simplifying processes for customer-facing staff.

The upgraded security technology forms part of LLA’s £100 million transformation programme that will increase annual capacity to 18 million passengers by 2020. The Airport will have a completely remodelled terminal, enhanced transport links and new shopping and dining options, including a new world-class executive lounge, designed to give passengers the best possible experience.
