In August 2012, Bakerbellfield successfully secured the sub-contract for design, manufacture and install of 450 Airport desks of over 70 different variations.

The tender process involved a visit to our Telford factory from main contractors, HETCo & the end client, Heathrow Airport Holdings Limited (formerly BAA).  The purpose of their visit was to assess our design and manufacturing capabilities to ensure we could deliver a desking project of this size.

The design process started in October 2012, with desk manufacture starting in December 2012. The project demanded 60 desks per month in order to meet certain key dates deliverables.

We worked with the project architects to develop the consistent approach to airport desks that HAL have adopted over other terminals.

The desks were mostly manufactured utilising the following materials:-

• Class 0 FRMDF
• Staron solidsurface material to all customer interfaces
• Polyurethane edged desking
• Stainless steel collision rail & skirting – 304 grade polished to 240 grit

One of the issues we were presented with at the start of the project was that the Staron Aspen Sirius solidsurface used to clad the Check In Desks had been obsolete for a number of years.  It was only available on an 8 week lead time with a minimum order quantity of 100 sheets.  This meant control of our material supply was key to ensure we did not end up with unnecessary stocks at the end of the project.

Throughout the project, we have been asked to vary some of the desk designs; most notably the Wave 3 Check In Desk, developed from a standard design to one featuring rotating saddles and extendable drawer units to enhance the operator/customer interface.  Project time constraints meant we had fewer than 2 months to develop and build a benchmark for HETCo & HAL approval.

One of the later workstreams called for Security Compliance furniture modules as designed, manufactured & installed by Bakerbellfield throughout other terminals.
