One of the 35 largest projects in Izmir, construction of the Adnan Menderes Airport New Domestic Terminal continues at a great pace. Being constructed by TAV, which was awarded the operation rights for 20 years at 610 million Euros, the new terminal will be put into service in 2014. With an investment of 250 million Euros, the New Domestic Terminal will be the most energy efficient airport in Turkey.

At a spectacular groundbreaking ceremony attended by the Minister of Transportation, Maritime Affairs and Communication Binali Yildirim and State Airports Authority (DHMI) General Manager Orhan Birdal, 15 per cent of the New Domestic Terminal of Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport has been completed. Constructed with an investment of 250 million Euros, the new terminal stands out with its environmentally friendly characteristics, modern architecture and high technology. TAV will apply for a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certificate, which will be a first in Turkey for a building in this size, for the New Domestic Terminal.

TAV Airports CEO M. Sani Sener stated, “Along with the International Terminal which we have been operating since 2007, the New Domestic Terminal will connect Izmir to Anatolia. This 250 million Euro investment will make Izmir the entrance point of the Aegean region, enabling it to realize its true potential. Being amongst the 35 projects of our government to bring Izmir to a point it deserves, the new terminal will be completed and put into service shortly. We are pleased to contribute to the economy of the region with this giant investment, at which approximately 3,500 employees will work during the busiest times. We would like to thank our Ministry of Transportation and DHMI for creating such a platform suitable for this important infrastructure project.”

TAV Izmir General Manager F. Erkan Balci, TAV Construction Project Manager Fatih Kan, TAV Izmir Technical Manager and Sustainability Project Group Leader Necdet Buyukbay also attended the press conference held at Swissotel to report the current status and targets of the project.

Being constructed by TAV Construction, the New Domestic Terminal will have an indoor area of approximately 200,000 square meters. The project involves a 3,000 vehicle closed and open car park.

Having submitted the best offer at the tender called by DHMI on November 17th, 2011, TAV affiliated company TAV Ege won the operation rights of the domestic terminal until 2032 at a price of 610 million Euros + VAT. Following the takeover of the operation by TAV Airports, the domestic flights were moved to the existing international terminal as of the beginning of the New Year to accommodate the work to be carried out. According to data issued by DHMI, Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport provided service to 9,295,290 passengers last year for an increase of 11 per cent. There are currently direct flights to 119 destinations, including domestic and international flights, in 35 countries from Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport.

Environmentally friendly terminal

Being awarded as the “Most Environmentally friendly European Airport” for its international terminal operated by TAV Airports, Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport's New Domestic Terminal began construction in June 2012. Every step of the infrastructure for the New Domestic Terminal is designed within the framework of TAV’s sustainable environmental policy. In this context, the target is to minimize energy and water consumption through heat pumps, rainwater harvesting systems, a gray water reuse system, storm water reuse system, solar collectors and trigeneration plant, and to achieve much more efficient waste management.

A trigeneration plant will be built to meet the power needs of the terminal building. The waste from the facility will be used in heating and cooling, providing improvement in the efficiency of energy consumption. Instead of using the electrical energy of the city network, natural gas energy production technology will be used to produce energy. Additionally, carbon emissions will be kept under control from the beginning of the process.
