On 2 February 2012, President Mwai Kibaki of the Republic of Kenya officially inaugurated the new passenger terminal building, runway, and access road at Kisumu Airport, Kenya.

The opening of the new airport complex marks an important milestone for Kisumu Airport, now uplifted to the Kisumu International Airport (HKKI). With the opening of the new passenger terminal building, about half a million passengers a year can be accommodated in comfort according to modern standards.

The new terminal building, designed to mainly accommodate flights up to Code C, with the flexibility to handle larger Code D aircrafts e.g. B767, also houses the main management and administration, and is destined to become the nexus in infrastructural developments for the airport premises. Its modular design features modern security and safety provisions. Rather than reflecting local characteristics, the architecture of the new terminal is meant to stand out and generate creativity for the numerous visitors from regional universities. With enhanced ground handling facilities the airport can remain operational, day and night.

After conducting the feasibility study, NACO, together with SSI Engineers and Environmental Consultants (a DHV Group member in South Africa), Howard Humphreys East Africa Ltd. (HH) and Panafcon Ltd. (both based and operating in Kenya and East Africa) engaged in the further detail design and engineering for the Kisumu Airport Upgrading Project. Planning and design services encompassed architectural works as well as full comprehensive airside and landside civil works and environmental studies. Furthermore, the team was responsible for the development of the electrical, mechanical, special and electronic systems and overall project management. During construction, an on-site team of specialists was permanently present for the overall construction supervision, quantity surveying and quality control.
