The project: Installing a pit into an existing workshop floor for a commercial vehicle dealership in the South West. The reinforced concrete floor being suspended on piles over contaminated, made up, ground.

Pit specification: Petrol regulation, Zone1 flame proof pit 20 metres long; 1.0 metre wide by 1.350 metres deep.

The problem: To fit the pit into the existing reinforcement and maintain structural integrity.

Solution: Constructed a purpose built cage using 20 mm diameter reinforcing bar. Then exposed the existing slab reinforcement and tied the cage into it thereby forming an integrated whole.

Outcome: A load bearing pit able to take 42 tonne vehicles, just like any built on solid ground.
