Airport Rescue and Firefighting Vehicles (ARFF)

Company Magirus GmbH
Date 30.10.2012

In October 2012 Iveco Magirus presented the highest articulated turntable ladder in the world with a reach of 42 meters. The new articulated turntable ladder provides significantly improved possibilities for firefighting use as with this equipment an additional height for rescue of up to three more stories can be reached.

The manufacturer, located in Ulm on the river Danube in the Swabia region, is the market leader since decades and sets the global standard for top class firefighting vehicles with special articulated turntable ladders. The new articulated turntable ladders is especially convincing through its outstanding working height, maximum outreach and exceptionally short setup times.

Key data: The articulated turntable ladder M 42 L-AS is installed on a 2-axles chassis, an Iveco EuroCargo 160 E 30 with 220 KW / 299 HP, with maximum 18 tons gross weight. Compared with a 3-axle chassis, this can save considerable weight and costs. The maneuverability and compactness of the vehicle is also significantly improved.

Operational height: The turntable ladder can be extended for use at an operational height of 42 meters and is additionally equipped with an articulated arm of around. 4.7 meters in length. This height, previously not achieved to date for articulated ladders, provides fire services with all the benefits of Magirus turntable ladders combined with the features of telescopic mast in the 40 meter class.

Outreach: Equally unique in this class is the maximum outreach of the ladder at 19.6 meters with a cage load of 300 kg and thus some 2 meters higher than comparable standard ladders of the 37 to 39-meter class. This excellent performance is achieved amongst other factors through the patented Magirus Single Extension technology. Here the upper section of the ladder is first extended and thereafter the other sections. Further competitive advantages of the Magirus Single Extension Technology are: the improvement of weight distribution and reduction of vehicle curb weight for increased payload which means more fire fighting tactical equipments.

Setup time: The extremely short setup of the ML 42 L-AS with less than 90 seconds and the simple and stress-free operation of the Magirus ladders proves to be very useful in practice for the fire fighters. The M L 42 L-AS at under 90 seconds setup and the simple and no-stress operation of the Magirus ladders have proven to be extremely helpful in practice.

Moreover, the new articulated turntable ladder of course has all the characteristic properties of the Magirus Ladder Range. This includes, for example, the Magirus Vario Jacking System, the ergonomic operator control panel, the sensitive extension of the ladder sections with a one layer drum winch and the generously dimensioned rescue cage designed taking into account tactical aspects and with unique corner accesses. Cages are available in 3 or 4 person versions plus extra load facility. Also standard is the oscillation damping system Magirus CS (Computer Stabilized), that detects all movements of the ladders as soon as these begin and absorbs the oscillations in a fraction of a second by means of hydraulic counteraction. User benefits of CS controls include a high level of safety, greater performance, more comfort and a longer lifespan.

The IVECO MAGIRUS Group develops and produces a globally unique range of vehicles and appliances for firefighting and civil protection.
