Perimeter Security is a difficult subject for civilian airports. Few passengers would be comfortable with a prison camp approach to perimeter security with dual 16 foot high fences and sterile zones between. However, a balance has to be struck between invasive deterrent measures and the risk of attack. This problem becomes even more acute where specific security demarcations at an airport are not bound by fence lines but by arbitrary lines on the ground.

HRS looked at just such an occurrence at Belfast International Airport in conjunction with its parent owner the Abertis Group. The requirement to monitor and alert on intrusions on to the Critical Part of the Security Restricted Zone led to the deployment of MFlow Detect, HRS’s Thermal Imaging and Behavioural Analytics solution to detect potential breaches of security whilst minimising false alarm rate in challenging external airport locations.

Deployed with a return on investment period of under two years the solution offers a proven alternative to fixed post Security Officers who can be redeployed to customer facing roles, notably in passenger screening areas, whilst maintaining, or in many instances improving detection and reaction to security events monitored 24×7.
