Hamad International Airport: 50 million passengers a year by 2020
Wanzl, the airport systems supplier, has a new reference customer in its portfolio – Hamad International Airport in Doha, Qatar, ordered 3,800 Voyager aluminium luggage trolleys for the baggage claim area and convenient transportation of luggage within the terminals. 13 Airport Scooters of the latest generation take care of efficient trolley management, ensuring the Voyager trolleys are transported back to the depot locations expediently, synchronising with the flight schedule and passenger numbers. Wanzl received an additional order for the security-controlled duty-free areas: 3,200 Airport Shoppers with ample room for products and hand luggage, helping to create a pleasant shopping experience. The trolleys were delivered in several batches, on time, predominantly between the fourth quarter of 2013 and the start of 2014 in Doha.
The new Hamad International Airport (HIA) is situated just a few kilometres away from the previous Doha International Airport, which is reaching its full capacity. From 2014, HIA will become a central transport hub in the Middle East, and one of the fastest growing airports worldwide, with world-class passenger facilities. At that point, 24 million passengers are expected to take off and land here every year, whilst by the end of the next stage of expansion in 2020, the aim is 50 million air passengers per year. With the double-figure growth rate at Qatar Airways, and therefore also at HIA, the airport will become one of the largest airports in the world in just a few years. Recently Doha has already been handling over 20 million passengers per year and with a connection rate approaching 80%, this destination is becoming an international hub airport. Plans from FIFA are also very promising: in 2022 the FIFA World Cup is set to take place in the emirate of Qatar, meaning football fans will be flying in from across the globe.
