The teaming of ARINC Incorporated with Lockheed Martin to bid on the U.S. Air Force’s Deployable Radar Approach Control (D-RAPCON) program unites two contractors with leadership records in Air Traffic Control (ATC) initiatives.

Lockheed Martin will serve as the prime contractor and will provide a version of its field-proven TPS-79 tactical surveillance radar, as well as Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)-certified air traffic management software.

ARINC is best known for its mission-critical communications services supporting the FAA and global aviation, but the company is also one of the few sources of deployable military ATC centers currently used in Southwest Asia.

The Air Force is seeking new rapid-deployment ATC and radar solutions to replace its existing 1960 to 1980-vintage technology. It has indicated a need for 19 deployable ATC units, of which 10 will be employed by Air National Guard units. Contract award is anticipated late in 2011.

ARINC has supported the U.S. deployment of transportable ATC systems in Southwest Asia since 2005, and has designed and built deployable ATC facilities under U.S. Navy Space and Naval Warfare contracts totaling $58 million since 2005. ARINC’s Command Control Systems & Services (C2SS) operations in Charleston, S.C., supported the development of transportable ATC facilities that continue to be used in-theater today.
