Hamburg—On September 6th 2013 Jungheinrich opened a new spare parts centre in Kaltenkirchen, which is situated north of Hamburg. In its capacity as a general contractor for complete logistics systems, Jungheinrich completely designed and built the central warehouse, based on a new logistics concept featuring optimised spare parts management. The new centre has created the foundation for fulfilling future market requirements, including 24/7 deliverability and faster, more efficient global spare parts logistics.

Following an 18-month construction period the central spare parts warehouse and spare parts management division was moved from its previous location at Norderstedt to the new spare parts centre in Kaltenkirchen in mid-August. The investment volume for this major project ran at around 35 million euros. Located on some 65,000 square metres of land, the new facility features 20,000 square metres of storage space including a 31-metre tall high-rack warehouse and over 65,000 warehouse items stored in 110,000 storage slots. The warehouse has an output of up to 1,000 list items per hour, enabling it to deliver spare parts to three different time zones – America, Central Europe and Asia. “This means Jungheinrich is setting a new standard in spare parts logistics, consolidating its competitive advantage in the spare parts business and expanding its spare parts availability rate to over 98 percent for its globally active clients,” states Dirk Schulz, Head of After-sales Service for the Jungheinrich group.

Office space at the spare parts centre takes up 3,800 square metres, designed on an “open space” principle. “Transparent and direct communication paths between staff members are the obvious advantage of this spatial arrangement,” says Stefan Brehm, head of Spare Parts Management at the Jungheinrich group, adding that incoming orders could be processed more efficiently, “getting the spare parts our clients have ordered even faster to them.” The new spare parts centre provides secure, “future-proof” jobs for the approximately 250 staff members who moved from the old location.

This major project was implemented by the Jungheinrich Logistics Systems business division. Other parties involved included the Spare Parts department, the Jungheinrich North Sales Unit and the Automated Systems department – all responsible for planning and implementing the automated side of the project. The Warehouse Management System (WMS) and control technology were also provided by Jungheinrich.
