HI-SCAN 10080 XCT can screen up to 1800 bags per hour

London, UK, May 29. 2012 – Smiths Detection today gave the first public preview of a next-generation, high-speed scanner for screening checked airport baggage for explosives. The new scanner was developed in cooperation with Analogic Corporation.

Images and details of the newly named HI-SCAN 10080 XCT, currently being tested by international regulatory agencies, were revealed at an Investor Day event in London. The revolutionary system combines Smiths Detection’s expertise in multi-energy x-ray technology and Analogic’s in three-dimensional Computed Tomography (CT).

The HI-SCAN 10080 XCT will maximise both detection and throughput capabilities to help meet increasingly stringent security requirements and allow easy integration into advanced baggage-handling systems.

Mal Maginnis, President of Smiths Detection, said: “This exciting new product raises baggage screening to a new level. It is designed specifically to meet the unique challenges faced by airlines and airports every day. It offers an unparalleled combination of size capability and throughput rate with the efficient space footprint and long-term value that operators need.”

The new system’s tunnel size allows scanning of larger items through automated inline handling systems. The combined imaging technologies can screen 1800 bags per hour with a belt speed of 0.5 metres per second.

The HI-SCAN 10080 XCT is designed to meet both European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC) and US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) standards for checked baggage inspection in support of global efforts to standardize security screening procedures and processes. First deployment is expected later this year.
