Airport X-ray Inspection and Explosives Detection Systems

Smiths Detection’s HI-SCAN 10080 XCT Explosives Detection System has become the first hold baggage screener to gain European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC) Standard 3 regulatory approval for use with five different types of trays. 

Trays — also known as totes — are used in most modern baggage handling systems to allow a smoother process, reducing bag jams and avoiding tracking losses. Major baggage handling systems suppliers, who place great importance on ECAC compliance, worked with Smiths Detection to achieve the certification. XCT now fulfills the highest detection requirements, even when used with trays for easier and cost efficient baggage handling.

The HI-SCAN 10080 XCT is the first system of its kind that combines widely used dual-energy X-ray technology with high-resolution 3D computer tomography. It was previously evaluated by ECAC, in accordance with Standard 3, in 2012 and is laboratory certified by the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA), fulfilling current regulatory requirements for the security inspection of checked baggage.

Operated at the highest belt speed of 0.5m/sec., the XCT can scan 50-65% more trays per hour than comparable equipment. This high throughput speeds inspection and improves airport efficiency, with fewer systems and less peripheral equipment required for integration into the baggage handling system.
