Another Award! Volacom’s Scientific Poster Awarded at WindEurope’s ElectricCity 2021 Expo

Volacom’s scientific poster on Real-Time Bird Detection and Collision Risk Control in Wind Farms grabbed one of the 8 awards among more than 230 participants at this year’s ElectricCity 2021 expo organized by WindEurope. Our study was one of the very few tackling wildlife hazard and biodiversity protection at wind farms.

The poster presented an experiment carried out using a BCAS Wind installation at an operational wind farm on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast with thermal imaging detection capability through the use of a custom-built detection software solution. The results were analyzed in detail and compared to local ornithological teams’ log books. The experiment found that the system achieved a true positive ratio of close to 92%, overwhelming human visual observations and day camera-based systems performance. It was another confirmation to our strong believe that thermal imaging is currently the best imaging technology when it comes to bird detection capabilities.

We at Volacom believe in science and science-led technological development and will continue our experimental trials to help us better understand the behavior of different bird species and the impact and effect different technologies have on them in order to achieve perfection in bird control. Our findings will always be shared with the wide public to support biodiversity protection during the Green Transition on a more massive scale.
