The world volume in air transport is projected to double over the next decade.
Maintaining and even increasing the level of safety in more crowded airspace is therefore a real challenge. Also environmental issues, like emissions and noise around airports are growing concerns.
In Europe big steps in international cooperation and harmonisation have been achieved by the foundation of Eurocontrol and the Single European Sky initiative. The start of the SESAR program is intended to take this to the next level.
The German Aerospace Centre (DLR) and the National Aerospace Laboratory of the Netherlands (NLR), two of the largest European aerospace research and development institutes, do fully recognise this need for international co-operation. Therefore DLR and NLR have formed a strategic alliance in the area of Air Transport R&D.
The Air Transport Division of NLR and the Institute of Flight Guidance of DLR have joined forces by the foundation of AT-One.
