Network Rail has awarded a major signalling upgrade for the London Overground to Atkins.

The project, worth over £40 million, will see a new signalling system designed and installed on the line (formerly known as the North London Line) which is currently under-going a major refurbishment paid for by both Network Rail and Transport for London.

Atkins has been appointed as the signalling works contractor tasked with taking the project from detailed design to final close. The work will boost capacity and is designed to benefit commuters as well as helping London 2012 visitors get to the Olympic Park in Stratford.

David Tonkin, managing director of Atkins rail business said: “We have a proven track record of delivering complex projects under pressure and we believe that is why we have been chosen to lead this work. As one of the key rail routes in to the Olympic Park area in Stratford the London Overground will be extremely important in the summer of 2012.”

Network Rail will deliver the TfL project which will form part of the London 2012 Olympic Games transport commitments. The work will take place in a very thin corridor in a highly congested area so it will be challenging. One of these challenges will be the significant number of sites where the new signalling will join with existing infrastructure.

The project is due for completion in 2011.
