Automatic Systems for Cargo and Baggage Handling and Airline Catering

Among experts around the world, the ICM Airport Technics brand has established itself as a leading provider of airport logistics solutions. ICM primarily supplies air cargo and baggage handling systems. As part of a reorganization at parent company Unitechnik, the business of ICM Airport Technics will be restructured. In future, the company will focus on developing and marketing innovative baggage handling systems. The former cargo segment will be taken over by the new company Unitechnik Systems.

As part of the restructuring of the corporate group, the cargo segment of ICM Airport Technics GmbH was consolidated with Unitechnik Cieplik & Poppek AG and is now doing business under the name Unitechnik Systems GmbH. The new undertaking bundles the competence areas logistics systems and airfreight handling installations. The main argument for taking this step: the processes in the cargo business and in classic intralogistics have become so similar from a technical standpoint that both segments complement each other optimally in the new company Unitechnik Systems.

For over 40 years, Unitechnik has been developing concepts to automate intralogistics processes and has established itself as a provider of turnkey logistics systems. The engineering expertise thus acquired over the years has been successfully used by ICM Airport Technics to manage and control modern cargo terminals. With the merger of the two companies, interfaces will be simplified and resources put to better use. "Whether an automatic high-bay racking store or efficient cargo terminal – both function according to similar principles and place comparable demands on a general contractor," says Dr. Michael Hohlrieder, CEO of Unitechnik Systems.

The ICM Airport Technics brand remains within the Unitechnik Group. In future, it will be synonymous with innovative baggage handling systems at airports. ICM Airport Technics has its own companies in Sydney, London, and Wiehl. Marketing activities will focus on the "Auto Bag Drop", a self-service system for checking in baggage at airports. ICM is the current market leader in this segment with the Auto Bag Drop product. Developed jointly with Qantas in Australia, 86 units of the system are already in use worldwide – and have meanwhile processed 15 million pieces of luggage. London Heathrow, Europe's largest airport, and its neighbour, Gatwick, have already tested the system and are satisfied with it. ICM Airport Technics profits from the financial strength of the Unitechnik Group in the financing of future projects and to further expand their leadership in technology.
