Kilfrost, the global leader in de-/anti-icing solutions, has announced that its Liquid Melt is used at Heathrow Airport to keep its driverless passenger pods moving during winter. Liquid Melt helped ensure the efficient functioning of the passenger pods that travel from T5 Business Car Park to Terminal 5.The unique Heathrow pod system was developed by UK company Ultra Global PRT and consists of 21 low energy, battery powered, driverless, zero emission vehicles capable of carrying four passengers and their luggage along a dedicated 3.8km guide way.
During extreme winter weather conditions, a modified pod is used to de-ice the track with Liquid Melt allowing passengers to continue the non-stop five minute journey without disruption. During recent harsh winters, the passenger pods have being able to keep running for 22 hours a day throughout snow and ice.

Kilfrost's Liquid Melt product was chosen for its excellent environmental credentials. The product is bio-degradable and non-toxic.  It was developed specifically for the fast and effective removal of frost, ice and snow, particularly in public unmanned areas.  It is fully soluble which means that no residue is left behind and it does not have the corrosive properties found in traditional rock salt, making it a safe and reliable alternative. Suitable for use on a range of surfaces, including concrete, bitumen and metal. Kilfrost Liquid Melt is ideal for use on car parks, walkways, platforms and steps.

Fraser Brown, Managing Director, Ultra Global PRT commented: "The Heathrow pod offers passengers a completely new form of public transport. Its service is predictable, decreases waiting time, offers reduced journey times and we are dedicated to ensuring the service continues to work in even the most difficult weather conditions. Kilfrost's Liquid Melt stood out from other products due to its exceptional environmental qualities. It is very effective and has allowed us to successfully keep our guideway clear of snow and ice and the pods in full operation. The product leaves no residue or discolouration on the guideway after repeated use."

Gary Lydiate, CEO, Kilfrost said: "We are delighted that we were the partner of choice for ULTra to provide products for use on the pod transport system. The Heathrow pods offer a journey that is free of emissions, which is in line with Kilfrost's ethos of researching and developing 'green' products. It is encouraging to see operators embracing our de-icing solutions and it is great to be part of innovative transit technology."
