Los Angeles International Airport

Lift off at LAXLos Angeles World Airports is reshaping Los Angeles International Airport to meet the capacity needs of the future
Los Angeles World Airport (LAWA), the city department that owns and operates Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), is undertaking a fast-track $5 billion midfield modernisation programme, for which Hatch Mott MacDonald is prime engineering consultant.

LAWA’s main goals for this project include increasing passenger comfort, travel efficiency and, most importantly, safety and security for existing and future passenger demand and flight capacity requirements.

A key component of the programme is a major expansion of the Tom Bradley International Terminal building. It also covers the development and excavation of baggage, utility, and passenger access tunnels beneath the airfield; new aircraft aprons and taxiways; and the creation of a remote multi-gate concourse at the west edge of the airport complex, connected to the central terminal area by an automated people mover.

Hatch Mott MacDonald is now involved with several contract deliverables, one of which includes design of the new central utility plant (CUP) at LAX. The existing CUP cannot meet the demand for today’s utilities. So Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) made the decision to demolish the existing CUP and replace it with a new facility— capable of generating roughly double the capacity of heating and cooling.

In addition, the new facility will incorporate modern technology advances to reduce dependence upon traditional power sources. Keeping sustainability in mind, the new CUP will also be among the first in the U.S. incorporating Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design standards.
