Today, Shell Aviation celebrated the start of operations at Katowice International Airport in Southern Poland, marking its entry into Poland’s growing aviation market.

In a move which underlines its position as a leading global aviation fuels and lubricants supplier, Shell Aviation now provides aviation fuels and associated services to selected airline customers at this airport. It is expected that Shell Aviation will start supplying fuel at further airports in Poland in the coming years.

Shell Aviation extends its global refueling network into Poland

Shell Aviation started supplying fuels to the Polish market in early January, 2013.

Katowice airport, 180 miles southwest of Warsaw, serves the industrial centre of Poland and has the country’s second largest passenger flow- with the capacity to handle two and a half million passengers a year. It is primarily used for passenger flights, charter flights and transport of cargo. Shell Aviation has one of the most extensive aviation fuelling networks in the world and is currently the only International Oil Company supplying aviation fuels in Poland.

Xinsheng Zhang, Vice President of Shell Aviation, said: “Our customers are growing in Poland and demand a strong service network. We look forward to supporting both our customers and aviation’s growth in Poland by offering our world-class expertise, industry knowledge and operational excellence to Katowice and other airports in future.”

Artur Tomasik, president of the board of the management company at Katowice Airport, added: “The fact that Shell, one of the world’s largest and most significant petrochemical companies, has chosen Katowice Airport as the first civil airport in Poland to launch its activities as fuel agent, serves to confirm our airport’s strong position in the Polish market. Shell joining Katowice Airport means that our airport will be the only one in Poland offering the services of three fuel operators. This will make Katowice Airport more competitive for airlines.”

The start of Shell’s fuel supply follows the granting of necessary licences to operate from the Polish Civil Aviation Authority in December 2012.  Aside from fuel supply, Katowice airport will also benefit from Shell’s extensive experience in working with airport authorities and other stakeholders to improve overall airport safety and fuelling operating standards.
