NetSys International recently successfully commissioned its nsWEBPIB product at Kenya Airways. This was a first for NetSys as previous sales were all for state or semi-state organizations. Kenya Airways is one of the major airlines in Africa and serves many destinations across the world.

Since meteorological folders are essential for flight operations, airlines in many cases rely heavily on state meteorological service organizations to provide this information. Budgetary and procedural constraints however hamper the agility of state entities, making it difficult to service the changing needs of commercial airlines. In an attempt to reduce flight delays caused by the lack of data, Kenya Airways approached NetSys to install and implement a web based pre-flight briefing solution.  After a visit by Kenya Airways personnel to the South African Airways flight operations, where similar software under the control of the South African Weather Services is used, Kenya Airways decided to procure the NetSys nsWEBPIB software.

The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) agreed to supply operational meteorological data (OPMET) and World Area Forecast System (WAFS) products as distributed via the ICAO SADIS satellite broadcast and the UK Met Office FTP backup service. A new redundant fibre link was installed between the KMD office and Kenya Airways Operations Control Centre (OCC), located about 500m away. NetSys supplied the HP server hardware that was installed in the OCC computer room. The flight folder layout was customized to match the existing Kenya Airways flight pack documentation. Following the engineering training, one-to-one on-the-job training was given to flight dispatchers.

The system was successfully commissioned in May 2011, confirming that NetSys has the capacity, resources and software to satisfy the end-user without having to operate via a middle-tier organization. The reliable just-in-time production of flight-folders at the local dispatch and global offices resulted in improved service levels and a reduction of costs to Kenya Airways.
