Aviation/Aircraft De-Icing & Anti-Icing Fluids

Company Kilfrost
Date 30.01.2014

Kilfrost, the global market leader in the supply of de/anti-icing products for the transport industry, has launched a new de/anti-icing fluid to overcome the challenges of frozen ballast.

Kilfrost AGT fluid is designed to prevent ballast from freezing so that it can be successfully transported and distributed onto the railway track. The product will be showcased at Infrarail, London, 20-22 May 2014.

Kilfrost has over 80 years’ of experience of inhibiting glycol for safety critical applications. Kilfrost AGT is non-hazardous as classified by REACH and CLP regulations and is fully biodegradable. It also offers high levels of de/anti-icing performance down to temperatures as low as -25°C.

The product can be easily sprayed onto the ballast, removing any moisture from the surface and creating a coating which prevents further moisture from forming. It is also highly resistant to precipitation.

Gary Lydiate, Chief Executive of Kilfrost commented: “Track renewals can be affected in two main ways. Firstly, the frozen ballast in the ground can significantly slow down the excavation of the old ballast, including the lifting of the old rail panels. Secondly, the new ballast arriving to site in the auto hoppers when frozen cannot escape down the funnel chute.

“Issues such as these lead to disruption on the railways and delays for passengers so it is vital that an effective de/anti-icing product is used.”

Kilfrost AGT can also be used to suppress dust, which can be created when track renewal work takes place in the proximity of populated areas or stations and can present challenges when railways are busy with commuters. The humectant and binding characteristics of the product mean it agglomerates particles and holds them together. Unlike when using water as a dust suppressant, Kilfrost AGT is still active even when dried.

Kilfrost’s range of products also includes Kilfrost Rail Plus, a specially formulated mono-propylene glycol based anti-icing fluid which prevents ice forming on the conductor rail. Kilfrost Rail also has this function and both products are suitable for use on points and switches. In addition, Kilfrost Rail is approved for the anti-icing treatment of brake callipers and associated riggings and Kilfrost Rail Plus has recently been approved for use on pantographs.

Finally, Kilfrost TDIce and Kilfrost TDIce Plus have been developed to be used as a de/anti-icing fluid within Swedish-based Nordic’s anti-icing systems. Kilfrost TDIce fluids are an effective means of de/anti-icing rolling stock, in particular the bogie area.

With its Super Grip, PowerPellet and Liquid Melt products, Kilfrost has also developed a range of materials for use on platforms, crossings and walkways.
