Baggage Handling Systems at Airports

Company Vanderlande
Date 29.02.2012

Vanderlande Industries will build and integrate a new fully automated baggage handling system for Pulkovo Saint Petersburg Airport in Russia. The new baggage handling system, worth 15 million Euros, will be integrated in a new passenger terminal that will give the airport the capacity to manage the growing amount of baggage that passengers will check-in for their flights from and to the airport.

In 2010, the city of St. Petersburg handed over the ownership, operation and development of Pulkovo Airport to a concessionaire, Northern Capital Gateway (NCG) which will operate and develop the airport for the next decades. Early 2011, NCG selected a joint venture of Turkish based IC-Ictas and Italian based Astaldi, both known main contractors to Vanderlande Industries, to develop a new combined international and domestic passenger terminal. This joint venture awarded the contract for the BHS to Vanderlande Industries, despite several offers from the competition, because of the smart concept offered against a competitive price.

According Mr. Ronald IJntema, Area Director at Vanderlande Industries “this order further confirms Vanderlande Industries’ leading position in the Russian Federation. We are now the leading baggage handling system supplier at the four busiest airports in Russia”.

The baggage handling system will include (amongst others) 96 check-in positions, two HELIXORTER tilt-tray sorters, a lane based Early Bag Storage for 820 bags, 7 tilted TRIPLANAR arrival carousels, configurations for manual inspection by Russian customs authorities and BRS (Baggage Reconciliation System), part of the Vanderlande VIBES software suite.

The Terminal is planned to be ready for operation in 2013.
