Baggage Handling Systems at Airports

Company Vanderlande
Date 28.11.2013

San Juan, Puerto Rico – In September 2013 Vanderlande Industries was awarded an $18.6M baggage handling system design and build contract from Aerostar Airport Holdings LLC (“Aerostar”) at Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport (“SJU”).

In February 2013 Aerostar won approval from the Federal Aviation Administration to lease and operate the San Juan Luis Muñoz Marin International Airport as a public-private partnership. Over the 40-year life of the lease, Aerostar will invest nearly $1.4B to increase aviation services, modernize its infrastructure and expand the airport’s number of flights and destinations.

Under Aerostar, SJU will undergo a major capacity enhancement program to consolidate the airport’s ca. 2.8M square feet. Rollout of the program first requires the airlines to be relocated to Terminals A and D, while complete renovation of Terminals B and C takes place. Once renovation is completed, services will be provided through terminals A, B and C.

“We are pleased to have Vanderlande Industries on board as part of our team. They will be in charge of the design and build of the baggage handling system in order to provide better and modern services to our passengers”, said Agustín Arellano, Chief Executive Officer of Aerostar.

The new baggage handling systems (“BHS”) to be installed in Terminals B and C were designed by Vanderlande Industries and have met all Transportation Security Administration requirements. The BHS features equipment from Vanderlande including Vertical Sorters, High Capacity Diverts II and Triplanar Tilted carousels with a total system length of approximately 6,200 linear feet.

Vanderlande has also played an integral role in assisting Aerostar with developing and implementing their interim plan to move airlines into Terminal D. This first stage of renovation is scheduled for completion in November 2013. The completion date for the new baggage handling systems in Terminals B and C is slated for November 2014.
