Baggage Handling Systems at Airports

Barcelona – Barcelona Airport has won the title of Europe’s best airport in the ‘over 25 million passengers’ category of the 2010 ACI EUROPE awards. The outstanding achievements of the SATE baggage handling system in Terminal 1 contributed significantly to the success.

The award, which was presented at the 20th ACI Annual General Assembly, went to Barcelona Airport based on its excellence and achievements in areas such as service quality (both for users and companies), range of commercial services, security and environmental awareness, amongst others.

The new technology that has made it possible to provide excellent service quality to passengers and companies includes the SATE automated baggage handling system designed and executed by the joint venture ABB-Vanderlande-DINSA. Vanderlande Industries led the first year of operation and maintenance of the system within the joint venture, which saw continuous optimisation of the system’s performance and services.

By May of 2010, the SATE system had processed more than 10 million items of baggage, achieving an excellent average availability and a high peak load per hour. A stand-out achievement was the ratio of baggage items that were not stowed on the same flight as the passenger, which, in May, was extremely low.

The jury was impressed by Barcelona Airport’s commitment to making T1 into a terminal designed to meet the needs of passengers and companies through the use of state-of-the-art technology. The terminal’s linear and spacious layout, combined with the efficiency of the processes, helps to ensure a smooth flow of users through the new infrastructure.
