UK-based Herbert Systems, leaders in innovative products for the airport industry, has won a contract to supply six of their new TRS Automatic Tray Return Systems to Stavanger Sola Airport in Norway. They will be installed in the security checkpoint area to speed throughput of passengers, reduce queuing and save costs.

The Herbert TRS is a highly flexible modular system for handling cabin baggage that is designed to eliminate the bottlenecks and stress that can occur at security checkpoints, move passengers through the area at greater speed and, at the same time, free up security staff to spend less time moving trays and more time maintaining a security presence. As a modular system, it is also easily configured to fit into almost any space.

Stavanger’s current manual system for handling cabin baggage at the security checkpoint involves the transfer of trays by trolley, which is time consuming, labour intensive and also causes conflict with in-bound passengers when the queue maze reaches capacity. The trays are also small, increasing the number of trays that need to be handled.

Stavanger Airport’s operator, Avinor, visited the Herbert stand at Passenger Terminal Expo in Copenhagen last year where they witnessed the Herbert TRS at first hand. Herbert’s engineers then travelled to Stavanger to witness the problems and safety issues associated with the current system and to enable them to devise the most efficient layout for a TRS system.

Spokesman of Avinor said: It’s correct that first interest of TRS first came up at the Passenger Terminal Expo in Copenhagen. From there Avinor launched a competition, inviting several companies to make a proposal. It was a very close race at the final, but Herbert Systems won the contract.

We are now really looking forward to get our TRS in place, and hopefully get rid of the queuing. If the numbers we have received are correct, we hope to improve throughput up to 80% from today’s old manual system. We are pretty sure that the passengers will have a lot better experience going through our new security check, and also important, it will bring a new world to our security staff. And finally we hope to reduce cost by installing TRS.

Andy Dowe, business development manager at Herbert Systems, says: “The Herbert TRS enables an IATA-sized tray to be presented automatically to each passenger at the security checkpoint at the right height for loading. Without having to wait for security staff, the passenger can load the tray immediately, speeding up the whole process. Trays pass along the line at a pre-defined spacing. At the end of the line, the trays are automatically returned, without staff having to lift or move them. It also means staff are able to spend less time as tray handlers and more time focussing on the security role. This is exactly the solution that Stavanger were seeking.”

The supply of the new TRS automatic tray return systems is part of a major project to relocate the central search area at Stavanger to a new location to the side of the existing area. Herbert has worked closely with the project manager and management team at Stavanger Sola Airport and main contractor Actus Radgivning to customise the TRS exactly to the airport’s requirements and to make the best use of space.
