Biral heads to Hamburg as 30th annual SMM fair docks in city

Biral, the meteorological expert, has today announced that it is exhibiting at SMM 2022, the leading international maritime trade fair, in conjunction with its partner, Observator Instruments from the 6th-9th September.

In line with the 10-year anniversary of its innovative BTD Technology, Biral will be showcasing its BTD-300 lightning detector at the event. Biral’s prototype BTD-300 detected its first thunderstorm in the summer of 2012 and has since detected ~140 thunderstorms within 20km of its home in Portishead, UK.

With the offshore environment perhaps one of the most demanding in the world, passengers and crew are dependent on the information provided to helicopters and marine vessels by meteorological systems. It is here that the reliability and robustness of offshore equipment can step in to provide data and warnings to minimise the hazards that come with bad weather.

The BTD-300 and BTD-350 have a detection radius of 83km (51 miles), with a single sensor able to reliably provide warnings for any marine, wind farm or large industrial site. Its real-time output can be taken into any control or monitoring system, used to initiate alarms or warnings and to track the path of a storm cell. Its hard-wired connection means that it is reliable, even in the worst storms.

The construction of very rugged sensors ensures that offshore structures will still be functioning many years after less durable equipment has failed due to the corrosive atmosphere, with Biral visibility sensors still operating after 15 years in marine environments. These are especially important for use on wind turbines, where they are positioned at the top and bottom of the device to control both the marine obstacle warning lights as well as the aviation warning lights.

Visibility sensors require low maintenance and are designed for harsh offshore environments, making them perfect to work alongside traditional tools. Additionally, they identify and report the presence of drizzle, rain and snow precipitation types, making them a vital addition for those looking to upgrade their technology in an environmentally conscious and sustainable world.
