This year, Bosch Security Systems was commissioned with bringing the Public Address and Voice Alarm systems as well as the fire detection systems at Paderborn-Lippstadt Airport up to date.

Since its foundation in 1969, the former regional airport has developed into a commercial airport – today it can be reached by both charter and scheduled flights from almost every origin.

During the planning phase for the new security concept, Bosch not only had to guarantee a minimum risk of false alarms for the 1,100 fire detectors at the site, but also had to take into account the particular characteristics of the airport architecture.

Announcements understood

The design of the arrivals hall at Paderborn-Lippstadt Airport made installing the digital Public Address and Voice Alarm system, Praesideo, particularly challenging.

The flat surfaces may look good, but they reflect sound, which can mean that important announcements are not always understood. For this reason, active Vari Array loudspeakers with an integrated power amplifier were fitted to the walls in this area.

This new system enables sound beams at a height of 1.2 to 1.7 meters to be directed straight to the passengers situated in the area, and prevents reflections against hard surfaces.

This solution not only makes the announcements in the terminal easier to understand, it is also very efficient: the Bosch solutions require only two active sound classes for an area of 1,200 square meters.

Rapid firefighting

In order to ensure that fires can be fought effectively, all alarm messages are transmitted directly as plain text via a digital system to the airport fire department’s pager.

The internal firefighting units located directly at the airport are contacted via a radio network installed by Bosch and can quickly reach the site of the emergency from wherever they are in the airport grounds.

The local fire department from the community of Paderborn is only alerted in a second step, if necessary.

Resistant to contamination

In the terminal's boarding bridges, kerosene deposits quickly form on the ceilings and walls, which could trigger false alarms with conventional fire detectors. To prevent this, Bosch installed 500 series fire detectors at these locations.

With these models, the cover plate is fitted flush with the ceiling, making the detector impervious to foreign objects, thereby minimizing the risk of a false alarm. Special carbon monoxide sensors ensure even higher levels of interference resistance.

The Public Address and Voice Alarm system as well as all the fire detectors are interconnected by the BIS Building Management System, which manages and controls them centrally via a user interface, and records all alarms.
