Budapest Airport – A Long-Term Friend!

Company HAURATON GmbH & Co. KG
Date 20.06.2025

Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport is the main international airport serving the capital city of Hungary. It’s the largest of four commercial airports in the country.

Formerly known as Budapest Ferihegy International Airport, it was renamed on the 25th March 2011 to celebrate the 200th birthday of the Hungarian composer Franz Liszt.

The airport is still popularly referred to as Ferihegy, the neighbourhood in which the airport is located, named after Ferenc Xavér Mayerffy (1776–1845), owner of an estate of vineyards that once sat on a sandy hillock in the same location.

The Hungarian Government and Vinci Airports purchased Budapest Airport in June 2024 and now have an 80% / 20% share, with Vinci the main operator through a concession that expires in 2080.

Headquarters and primary hub for Wizz Air, the airport handled 17.6 million passengers in 2024.

HAURATON has been active in Hungary for over 25 years and has maintained a close working relationship with Budapest Airport for over 20 years, having been a proven and reliable partner for BUD regarding the supply of linear drainage systems and water technology products on numerous construction and maintenance projects completed during this time.

HAURATON’s subsidiary office and warehouse in Hungary is just a short drive from the airport site.

HAURATON’s team in Hungary has provided active technical support on every project through help with system selection, rainwater management concepts, surface drainage designs and installation advice.

HAURATON systems installed in airside areas at Budapest Airport include FASERFIX SLG and FASERFIX BIG BL.

Both systems are load-rated to F 900 with proven performance in airside locations continually subjected to ‘ultra-heavy-duty’ loads and dynamic forces, where linear surface drainage is required to be safe, strong, durable and maintenance-friendly.

These systems are also supplied and laid with an integral monolithic concrete encasement (channel walls / channel base) which helps achieve a quick, precise and high-quality installation.

HAURATON systems have also been installed within landside projects.

A current expansion project at the airport includes the construction of a car park facility where HAURATON HUNGARY has supplied over 2000 m³ of the RAUSIKKO Infiltration & Retention system to provide efficient, ‘high-capacity’ capture, storage and management of rainwater and stormwater on site.

Miklós Hollentunder, MD for HAURATON Hungary for nearly 10 years noted the following:

‘Our team in Hungary is happy and proud to have such a long working relationship with Budapest Airport, based on providing consistent ‘high-quality’ products and support. We hope this continues well into the future’.

HAURATON has supplied linear drainage systems and water technology products to over 100 airport projects worldwide.

Feel free to contact us if you have a drainage scheme to design on your airport project.
