Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport Enhances Safety Measures with Cutting-Edge Aircraft Recovery Equipment from RESQTEC

Company RESQTEC
Date 12.10.2023

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) has taken a significant stride in bolstering its operational safety by acquiring state-of-the-art aircraft recovery equipment from the renowned Dutch company, RESQTEC. This strategic move is set to revolutionize the airport’s emergency response capabilities and reduce runway closure times by over 50 percent in the event of incidents with disabled aircraft.

The newly acquired aircraft recovery equipment from RESQTEC is designed for swift and efficient removal of disabled aircraft, ensuring operational continuity without compromising safety or incurring secondary damages. This comprehensive solution, known as the Disabled Aircraft Recovery Kit (DARK), encompasses a range of cutting-edge tools, including the R2S lifting system, pneumatic aircraft lifting bags, tethering equipment, de-bogging kit, recovery trailer & fuselage transition, recovery dolly, and lifting sling. These components work in synergy to lift, balance, and transport disabled aircraft effectively and securely.

The equipment was delivered and training was conducted during the week of 11 – 15 September 2023. During this period, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) observed the training sessions and assessed the capabilities of the DARK equipment.
The successful completion of the project was marked on 15 September 2023, following the delivery, commissioning of the equipment, and comprehensive training of the dedicated aircraft recovery team at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport.

A remarkable testament to the effectiveness of this investment occurred during the delivery training on Thursday, 14 September 2023, when a severe landing incident disrupted operations at CSMIA. Thanks to the newly obtained knowledge, skills, and cutting-edge DARK equipment, along with support from RESQTEC experts, CSMIA rapidly reopened the runway and safely removed the disabled aircraft. This incident underscores the importance of preparedness for airports and airlines when dealing with disabled aircraft incidents.

Suryanarayan Pichumani, Head of Airside Operations of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), commented, “We welcome the first Disabled Aircraft Recovery Kit (DARK) which CSMIA has procured from RESQTEC. CSMIA is now the first airport in Asia to acquire the cutting-edge Disabled Aircraft Recovery Kit (DARK) with High Pressure Lifting Bags that ensures superior durability, requires minimal manpower, and provides more efficient recovery process, in contrast to conventional low-pressure counterparts. The acquisition of the Disabled Aircraft Recovery Kit (DARK) with High Pressure Lifting Bags perfectly aligns with CSMIA’s strategy of resilient airport infrastructure whilst enhancing passenger experience.”

Dennis Beck, Global Sales Director at RESQTEC, stated, “We are very pleased that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport and the Adani Group have chosen RESQTEC as their trusted partner for the Disabled Aircraft Recovery Kit (DARK). With the adoption of the latest and most advanced technology, the Rapid Recovery System (R2S), CSMIA is well-prepared to support the growth of India’s aviation industry. This DARK sets the industry standard for safety, speed, and future-proofing, ensuring compatibility with the modern aircraft ordered by India’s major carriers. It is the only air transportable DARK in India with a capacity of aircraft up to code E, without the need for heavy and time consuming cribbing materials”

Background Information:
In response to safety concerns and past incidents, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) issued a directive on 15 July 2019, mandating the acquisition of Disabled Aircraft Recovery Kits (DARK) by major Indian airports, including Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA). This directive followed a runway incident involving a SpiceJet Boeing 737-800 aircraft during heavy rain conditions, which led to the closure of the airport’s main runway and the cancellation of numerous flights.
