Design and Manufacture Live and Training Voice Communication Systems for ATC Environments

Company Troysys Limited
Date 31.01.2014

What with the delivery of the largest VCCS Troy has built, installed at Gimhae Airport, Busan, Korea, the delivery of EVCS systems to four UK airports, the fourth training system to Air Navigation Services of the Czech Republic and a variety of custom products, 2013 was the most successful year Troy systems has seen since it started developing these systems in 1990.

The following is a list of the projects undertaken in 2013:

NATS (Services) – UK, Manchester Airport EVCS
In early 2013, Manchester Airport took delivery of a 12 position system with access to 10 telephone lines and 10 radios. Following the successful appointment by NATS (Services) as the preferred supplier of EVCS systems, this was the first of many Troy Emergency Voice Communication Systems to be supplied to the UK Airport industry.

NATS (Services) – UK, Birmingham Airport EVCS
At the same time the EVCS was being delivered to Manchester Airport, Birmingham Airport took delivery of a 7 position system with access to 8 telephone lines and 8 radios.

As well as normal EVCS functionality, this system included a Landing Clearance Indicator System integral to the user touch panel.

NATS (En Route) – UK, CTC and New Prestwick Centre Training Simulator
In 2006, NATS (En Route) had an 82 position training simulator, simulating the PAS-220. In 2008 this was increased to over 160 positions and in the same year the New Prestwick Centre had 53 positions also simulating the PAS-220 but with the addition of a 20 position, one off, Frequentis 2030X simulation.

In 2012 the NATS simulator requirement changed and it became necessary to provide a common software platform across the two installation sites. This upgrade was provided and successfully delivered in February 2013.

Mittarfeqarfiit – Greenland, Sisimiut Airport VCCS
In June 2013 we supplied Mittarfeqarfiit with a two position system with access to 8 telephone lines and 8 radios for the remotely located Sisimiut Airport in Greenland. As with the engineers installing Troy EVCS systems in the UK, after training in the UK, engineers from Greenland installed and commissioned this system without a site visit from Troy.

Due to the simple architecture of the Troy VCCS, self installation and commissioning, which keeps overall system cost low, is an increasing popular advantage to purchasing the Troy VCCS and we hope to supply Greenland with many more systems in the future.

Busan Regional Airport Authority – Korea, Gimhae Airport VCCS
With 41 positions, access to 27 radios, main and standby, and access to 73 telephone lines of various types, the system delivered to Gimhae Airport, Busan, in May 2013 was the largest system Troy had delivered. The system also has capability for future expansion to 35 radios, main and standby, and 120 telephone lines.

With many new special functions, including the implementation of a Request and Answer system between Approach and Tower Controllers, which is integral to the user touch panel, this was an exciting project that Troy are proud to have been a part of.

BAE Systems – UK, Dual PC
BAE Systems are a long time customer to Troy Systems and as well as supplying them with Military VCCS systems they sometimes require Troy to build custom products. Having built the first in 2009, in August 2013 Troy supplied a custom built dual PC. Troy look forward to building more custom products for BAE Systems in the future and continuing the support of their Military systems in use all over the world.

ANS CR – ANS CR Training Centre Prague, Custom Training System
Troy first met representatives from The Air Navigation Services of the Czech Republic whilst exhibiting in 2010. Since then Troy has formed a strong relationship with ANS CR and as a result, in September 2013, Troy delivered a fourth custom training system to the ANS CR Training Centre in Prague.

This system had 27 controller positions making to total now delivered up to 84. These systems currently have access to 95 simulated radios, 820 telephone lines of varying types and 900 controller/trainer roles.

Due to the heavy use of these systems, and to keep them ‘state of the art’, Troy also implemented new software and hardware to make the systems fully dual redundant and enhanced the system functionality to make overall control of the systems more advanced.

NATS (Services) – UK, Farnborough Airport EVCS
In September 2013 Farnborough Airport took delivery of a radio only 12 position system with access to 12 radios. Although not used, 12 telephone interfaces are available within the configuration of the system for future expansion if needed.
This was also the first EVCS system to be fully supplied in console mounted form.

NATS (Services) – UK, Bristol Airport EVCS
In September 2013, a five position system with access to 5 radios and 5 telephone lines was delivered to Bristol Airport. As with all other EVCS systems, following a successful factory test this system was delivered, installed and commissioned by NATS (Services) engineers without need for help, or extra cost from Troy.

NATS (En Route) – UK, Serial Switch
As with BAE systems, at various times Troy has supplied NATS (En Route) with custom products. Six of one such product known as a Serial Switch were produced and delivered in October 2013.

Currently….
Now working on the next EVCS project with NATS (Services) for Glasgow Airport, further software enhancement projects for ANS CR, and a variety of other projects on the horizon, Troy are looking forward to another successful year ahead.
