Design and construction of a runway including lights and Navaids and a new terminal building including facility buildings (ATC tower, fire fighting facilities). Utilities including generators, chill station, water station, sewage treatment and communication were also designed and constructed.
Marsa Alam Airport is built in the middle of a desert without any supply at all and all systems must be self-supporting. The area around the airport is still in development, so the possibility of extending the airport had to be taken into account. Furthermore, the employer demanded high quality but also strict budget control and time schedule. This required a high level of discipline on the part of the designing team, Deerns, NACO, and the Engineering Consultancy Group (ECG), a local party. Cutting down costs was realized by sub-contracting and by ‘Procurements of Goods’ (Packages) in fire fighting facilities, ambulances and First Aid facilities, and security facilities.
