A new design has been made for the international airport of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia to be able to handle approximately 20 million passengers in the year 2020. The existing terminal of 20 000 m2 which will be renovated while remaining operational during construction, will be incorporated in the new terminal. The project also includes the design of a new power station, a new chill facility and the renovation of two existing runways.
The terminal building requires complicated climate control: a lightweight roof structure and a transparent façade in a desert climate make it very difficult to create a comfortable climate inside. After thorough analysis it was decided to use floor cooling to compensate the heat induced by the radiation of the roof. Furthermore, the radiation is reduced by applying a “low emission coefficient coating” to make the roof reflect external radiation.
