Industrial type Safety Break-away couplings

Mann Tek – well known on the market for it’s Dry Disconnect Couplings – has released a new line of Breakaway couplings designed to prevent pull-away accidents, protecting operators, loading/unloading equipment (hoses and loading arms) and eliminates unwanted product release.

The Breakaway range starts at 1” size and goes up to 12” and is available in aluminium, brass and stainless steel. The couplings could be equipped with a wide range of sealing material resistant to all types of fluids and gases.

In order to assemble them direct on the hose or loading arm and avoid the use of reducers or nipples they could be equipped with all types of threads and flanges (such as NPT or BSP threads, ASA or DIN flanges, victualic grooves etc). The customer is free to combine the inlet and outlet connection, making the range the most wide and flexible in the market.

After release the Break away couplings could be reset by one man without the use of special tools.

These types of couplings (Safety Break-away couplings) are used to provide safety in situations where the hose can be placed under tension, leading to failure, such as ship loading and unloading, aeroplane refuelling, road and rail tanker loading and unloading

The coupling has a diverted breaking point which will break at a determined break-load where upon the internal valves will automatically close on both sides to eliminate product loss. This will in a long run minimise down time, save money, equipment and the environment.

The Break-away couplings are available as industrial and marine types. The industrial type is typically installed on a loading arm or hose end where at least one side of the coupling is attached to a fixed point. They will be activated with a tensile force being applied at an angle up to 90 degrees.

Marine couplings on the other hand are designed to provide increased resistance to torsion and bending forces and will only release by inline pull. They are used between two strings of hoses. Typical applications are ship to offshore platform, and ship to ship product transfer operations.

Non-closure versions are available in both the industrial and marine versions. The non-closure design acts purely as an identified safe parting point within the transfer system, protecting equipment and personnel.
